Do the tool indents make it a early 46. Or did some one put a MB tub on it?
I’m pretty sure it’s an early 46 since it has the tail gate and no glove box. I can’t tell from the pics but doubt it has MB features like the rear tool boxes or shock towers.
I wonder what’s around the windshield frame: it that reinforcement or left over from a previous hard top modification?
Mel: It’s a good question. The tool indents coupled with the nearby gas inlet are signs the body is a 1945 or early 1946 CJ-2A body. The existence of the nearby drain hole (which mb bodies didn’t have) and the tailgate (which mb bodies didn’t have) strongly suggest this was an early CJ-2A body. Finally, there’s no glove box on the dash (like most MB bodies had — early mb slat grilles didn’t have glove boxes).
Now, add to that the 1945 – mid 1947 front grille and everything seems to point to the body being an early CJ-2A body.
Of course, someone skilled could do a pretty convincing job of making a MB appear to be a 2A body, but that’s pretty rare in my experience.
Joe: I couldn’t say why there are additional pieces around the windshield. They might strengthen the windshield frame or make it more wind/rain proof for a top. The piece across the top looks like it might have been setup to use a later model soft top.
Thanks for the info. I get to learn new stuff about these all the time.
I looked at the windshield frame and agree it looks like some kind of top with doors was meant to go there.
