Sometimes it is used to cover up rust and sometimes to cover up damage. Other times they are used to prevent damage. We have some trails in the northwest that are so tight you have to pivot the jeep around a stump. That’s one of the reasons I have a side bar installed on my jeep (rather than put the diamond plating on it. Those stumps would eat the side of my fiberglass body πŸ™‚

    Dave,

I totally understand. You definitely need them on a fiberglass body. However, I’m not so sure it would protect the body from hitting a rock on a trail. Side bars are great for offroading. My friend has a 4-runner with sidebars and has saved us numerous times on trails. When I was looking for a jeep, the majority of the flat-fenders that had diamond plates, covered up rust and dents in the body. I guess I’m just a “stock” kind of guy.
