Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Wow one day on ewillys and apparently this jeep sold. you missed it on craigslist before dave. if it wasnt so far away i would have bought this one. i can stop thinking about it now!
It was posted on CL on November 6th, I moved up to the Panhandle about 3 weeks ago and have been cruising Craigs for a Willys all over the Southwest. I daydreamed about this one for a few days, then yesterday, I drove down to Shallowater(near Lubbock) with $2500 in my pocket. The motor and body are original, but the data plate on the frame horn is missing, so I can’t verify that. I’m fairly certain, just by looking at the consistent “patina”, that it is all original motor, tub, and frame. It’s my baby now and I’d like to announce that it’s running well…after some work. I have wanted one of these since I was 3-4 years old!
The fuel line is cut and it came with a free Prestone jug full of gasoline and a 3 feet of fuel line….but it works…. Didn’t come with a battery, either. Anyway, I replaced the battery, cables, plugs, wires, and it already had a new distributor and coil. The master cylinder and wheel cylinders are shot and the body is somewhere between meh and so-so, but it is in remarkably good condition on a lot of levels. The fuel system is all factory and works very, very well. Fuel tank is nice and clean, straps are missing, but the cap is original. The engine looks like it has never been opened. I could go on and on, it’s just a cool little Beep, as my toddler calls it.
The guy that sold it to me has a shop with about a dozen old Jeeps of various decades parked out back. About half run, I reckon. You might call him and ask, he’s financing an RC Track on his property and a few thousand $$$ couldn’t hurt.

Sounds like you got a good one jeff. well dave if i ever sell a jeep i definately want you to list it. ive seen a few jeeps that werent selling sell instantly after you posted them.
I will be in the market for one in late Jan or Feb. Do you know where I can find one that will not cost an arm and leg to get it up and running? My wife and I would love to have one. Near Brownwood, Tx.

There isn’t a huge selection of used military jeeps out there, so they tend to go fast when they are listed. There are still deals that pop up (and that I miss). I would check out any local classified listings to see what appears. Generally speaking though, most wwii jeeps at low prices will need work. If you want to have them run on the road, you’ll likely have to invest some money to get them road worthy. It’s pretty much a ‘pay now’ for something that works well or ‘pay as you go’ if you find something that needs work. Unless you can do all the work yourself, the latter jeep can often cost more in the end.

Alton, Texas is a tough market. There are a lot of Bubbas with money around there that want a cool huntin’ buggy or rock crawler. They go quick and they seem to seldom have titles. I wasn’t sure if I was up to the challenge for this vehicle, but I hated to see it fall in the completely wrong hands. The more I’ve been messing with it and researching, the more I’m absolutely in love with it. I’ve seen a fair amount of Willys with good bodies in NM and AZ, but that’s a bit of a hike from Brownwood.
