Bob reports they’ve been running this Jeep Train in Galveston, TX, since 1951. I tried to find some old photos or articles, but didn’t have any luck.
I went up that small museum last night and did not find anything on it.
I was born and raised in Galveston and actually drove a Taxi there for many years. The tour train, tour bus, and Yellow Cab Galveston were all owned by Bob Walker who I believe is no longer with us. The Cab company was sold out to Greater Houston Transportation (Houston yellow Cab). I’m not sure about the train. The original tour trains Jeep was dressed out like a locomotive but sometime in the 80’s it was replaced by a regular CJ7. The train used air brakes and very often the welds on the car links would break and leave tourist stranded, of course the cab company was always there to the rescue!
The train pictured is a more modern version, the original had around 6 smaller cars that only sat 4 people. The company also owned a 1920’s White bus they called the tour bus. It was originally a steamer as most Whites were in the 20’s, but was modernized with a Chevy Chassis and engine.
