Lou spotted this classic image of a man and his wagon at the New Jersey State Archives Facebook page. The chair hanger / fishing pole holder on the passenger side is interesting. Lou writes, “That’s on the beach at Island Beach State Park with Barnegat Lighthouse in the background – since those 10 miles of beach are preserved it still looks about the same and you can buy a pass to drive on the beach and fish.”
it’s been a long time since you were able to drive a vehicle on the Jersey shore; this has to sometime in the early 1950’s; very cool picture.
That’s a really classic photo. You can still drive on the beach in NC but you have to buy a $50 permit and take a short “class” that teaches you that it against the law to feed seagulls on the beach.
While Mike is correct about most of the Jersey Shore, you can STILL drive to that spot on Island Beach State Park in NJ. I was there in my friend’s Toyota pickup, beach fishing in ’99. He had a season pass (a vehicle permit similar to what Buz mentioned about NC… 3 days now costs $50 and a season pass is $195). I remember we had to get out and let air out of the tires down to about 15-20 PSI so we wouldn’t get stuck. Unfortunately that whole area was desimated by Hurricane Sandy last year, so that exact section of shoreline has likely moved out to sea or is now inland.
