Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Here’s an interesting article in the May 1945 issue of Popular Science about welding on the battlefield that includes several references to using jeeps as portable welding units. There is a copy on eBay for only $5.99. Here are a couple images from the article:

From what I’ve been told, you live day-to-day in war. And you have to be self-sustaining. I’m sure some units didn’t have the luxury of having a welder, and had to learn how to get by without one.
