Thats a 153 Chevy II engine, it has a very early production valve cover with the Chevy written on it. I had one with that valve cover and it was made in June ’61. This engine pictured here is likely a ’62 early production also. If the engine is any good it would be worth the asking price alone.

I wish this Jeep were closer. I’ve been looking for a Chevy II 4 cyl forever. It would be a perfect re-power for a lightweight CJ, or Jeepster, increasing the old L-head HP by 50%, without needing a shoehorn, or overpowering the light vehicles. The best one I’ve found was on the other side of the country, so shipping killed the deal.

I settled for an even more hard to find engine to re-power my little Jeepster, a Willys F6-161, which will bolt right up without any modifications except I will have to replace the grill assembly from a donor 6 cyl wagon, which will move the radiator forward. These engines with a rear oil sump were only found in ’52/’53 2WD Willys Wagons. F6-161’s out of Willys Sedans had front oil sumps and the oil pan won’t clear the chassis on a Jeep engine swap.
