“1/4 ton Willy’s jeep M38A1 Needs interior finishing, canvas and partial fuel system works. Runs good Has cut out windshield, for gun ***Been converted to 12v electrical system”
Has a “reckless” windshield.
Hi Muley,
That’s the first time I’ve heard that term used for the windshield. Do you have more info on that?
– Dave
The M38A1C had the 106MM recoilless (reckless) smooth bore gun. When stowed the barrel laid between the windshield halves. An absolute beast i’ll wager.
For what it’s worth, it seems to have a non-standard battery box lid.
Also, the early style front fender with the angled joint, which would be earlier than 1958.
Miley, thanks for the explanation.
JohnB, the battery box setup is odd for sure, I can’t remember seeing one like that.
And, it has the hinged grille .. I must have been in a hurry! I’d bet this is 52/early 53. There were other “Cs” made this early. Perhaps the body was redone at some point, because it is missing some of the holes for the forward spare tire mount, the passenger side mounted jerry can, and the holes for mounting the gun itself at the rear corners. However, it seems more likely someone modified an early standard M-38A1, cut the tailgate, and mounted the windshield. But, why go to all that work, only to have a weird cowl lid? We’ll likely never know … Here’s what a “C” should look like: https://www.m38a1.com/Models/models_106.htm
