UPDATE: **SOLD** What we may be seeing is a CJ-5 Renegade I that was built in late 1970. So, even though it was a 1970 production, it is considered a 1971 model. There is a discussion about that here: http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/45677/
The engine has been updated, but the Renegade stripes and purple color are still there.
“1971 cj5 renegade Spec sheet pictured from previous owner Has a new 4.3l Chevy v6 with approximately 8k miles on it. 69k on odometer thus on body Body in great shape! Nice patina on faded factory purple paint. Newer toyo tires Warn winch Collector plates Comes with optional bikini top and suicide doors. Cash only please.”
Not to many Renegade 1s were made in purple. Around 250 green and 250 orange .I believe the purple ones were dealer ordered is why they were made later in the model year. The purple one I have has a October 1970 build date but registered as a 1971.. This is probably a 1970 model. Vehicles registered after September of that year get titled as the next year. !971 was the 2. To bad the factory rear axle is gone.
Wow, it has the “lawn mower” ignition and key option! 🙂
It’s not a Renegade. The Renegades had a solid, non-opening tailgate with the rear tire mount bolted to the rear.
It’s a 1970 model
Renegade I
Tailgate and rear swing-out tire carrier
Cool Plum is the color
1971 Renegade II
No tailgate
The local dealer had one
Remember sitting in it.
This is kind of a tricky one … What we may be seeing is a CJ-5 Renegade I that was built in late 1970. So, even though it was a 1970 production, it is considered a 1971 model. There is a discussion about that here: http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/45677/
Considering the last posting, 1974 CJ;s were produced with a date of manufacture
of November 1974, and were considered 1974 models due to the emission standards
that went into effect for the 1975 model year–Catalytic converter and some other emission items.
Getting back to the Renegade 1. They came with 8″ wide KH wheels, not spoke or aluminum, with Goodyear Polyglas Street tires. Also think the grille was painted white.
Hey yall – new owner of this rig here. Can confirm that it was a 1970 build based on the dash sticker. I believe the white grille is from the factory as I’ve seen ONE other photo of this configuration somewhere online – but have since not been able to refind it.
Turns out the briggs and stratton ignition isn’t that uncommon in old GTO’s, etc. – it works just fine!
Congrats on the purchase and thanks for the update! For some reason, this one really appealed to me. I think it’s the purple theme. Best of luck with it!
