UPDATE: Price dropped to $15,500

Sri spotted this unusual M-422A with a hardtop.  I don’t remember seeing a hardtop on one of these. Was this something that was available for an M-422A through a third party the way the M-38 and M-38A1 hardtops were? This fit seems pretty good.

My opinion from 50 years experience with military surplus, this is not a military retrofit or cold weather enclosure. That said, it’s a very well done custom top. Would be nice to have a pic of the back end, but typical of a FB ad. Does not look like it would have been hard to modify an ACME fiberglass hard top into this. Remember, the windshield of a 422A1 was the same as an M38A1, so the basis was there to modify from . These were not “made… for the Vietnam war”. They were made for the Marine Corp for any theater and production had ceased prior to our entry into Nam. 4 vehicles were made simultaneously for the Corp from 60 – 62: M422 series, M38A1, the IH Scout 80 and M151 the last of which the Corp was not satisfied with and wanted to try the others listed. The neat thing about the 422s is they are able to fit in the back of an 8′ bed pickup truck. Started out mom and pop production in Ohio and then bought and produced by AMC.

This Mite belonged to Cameron English, who described the top as custom made, held down by 4 catches, with removeable doors, and could be taken off in minutes. It ended up at Mecum auction, then it was marked down to $9,999 with mechanical issues. There are a couple of videos on Youtube. There was also some video on the M422 FB page, but he deleted his membership once the Mite sold, so I don’t know if it’s still available.
