“You are bidding on a very early, very original, very complete and unmolested 1945 BT3-C, 1/4 Ton Civilian Trailer. It was built by the Bantam Car Company in Butler, Pennsylvania. Bantaminvented the original WWII jeep and built approximately 2,500 pre-production models prior to Willys and Ford taking over the production of jeeps for WWII in late 1941 and the spring of 1942. Bantam was then relegated throughout the remainder of WWII to buildingthe 1/4 ton ‘jeep’ trailer that was typically towed by either the Willys MB or theFord GPW jeeps.
This trailer is a very early model that was in all probability, madefrom parts left over from the war time production of the military ‘jeep’trailer. Besides the very low serial number, other early features include: The single, original tail light; The type of reflectors; The 4 tarp tie downs along each side; the inverted tie down on the front for the inter-vehicular electric cable; And the round, rear, side support rods installed because of the tail gate.It is also an excellent example of anunmolested trailer in good to very good, original condition. One of its keyfeatures is the original ‘Covered Wagon’ wood frame work and hardware.
It is my understanding that these trailers left the factory in Butler painted either red or green in color. Some of the early ones are believed to have left still in olive drab. This one shows some sign of having been painted OD green at some point
The onlyknown, non-original items on the trailer, are the wheels. As early as thistrailer is, it probably would have departed the factory originally with leftover combat wheels. Starting in 1942 all of the MB and GPW jeeps were equippedwith these wheels. No title, Bill of Sale only. i like this — but i already have one — and heres whats weird — this one is serial number 895 — mine in 795 — exactly 100 units lower !! — i dont have the conestoga wagon top frame , but could make one — i also didnt get the ww2 combat 16″ rims — i do have some though — mine was the civilian green , painted over with faded olive drab
I have Bantam TC3 3117 and it still has combat wheels.
