Barney from Barney’s Jeep Parts sent November 1961 edition of the Jeep News our direction. The FJ-3A makes a big splash with a variety of images on page 4. Several Jeep Clubs, including California’s Auburn Jeep Club, Denver’s Mile-High Jeep Club, and Washington’s Trailer Breakers Jeep Club get mentioned. One article highlight’s Buddy’s win of a Surrey and Sailboat from the Del Monte Contest and includes an image.
There’s also a mention of photos and writeup about the Jeep Jamboree in the December 1961 issue of Argosy Magazine, but I cannot seem to find the issue on eBay.
Tina Louise of Gilligan’s Island fame on page six!!!
The shot of the actor in a Navy uniform…(I have seen the film, can’t say I remember him..just Pat Boone, Barbara Eden (second ’60s sitcom reference) and Buddy Hackett.
So, is that “Navy” Jeep really Navy?
It’s not a M38A1, so it’s a CJ-5.
I understand the military did buy some CJs for non-combat (or state side) use, so any experts around to say if the serial number is legit?
Probably not.
John,
I hadn’t noticed Tina Louise, but there she is!
Naval CJ-5s were a thing and this link https://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=106156 provides some evidence of that. Whether the CJ-5 in the show was originally military or not will probably never be known, but it seems possible.
