There are those 66 Mustang tail lights again, and when I installed them on my 66 CJ5 back in the early 80’s, I thought that was unique.
Mike,
The Mustang lights were a popular mod on the west coast. I haven’t seen them as much on the east coast jeeps, so you were pretty unique as best as I can tell.
According to the air cleaner, the 289 is likely from a 1966-68 Bronco. I was wondering how they got the headers to clear the steering shaft – then I noticed the welds. The brakes have been converted to a dual master cylinder with a swinging pedal, but the clutch still goes through the floor board, likely with the Advance Adapter chain kit. If it doesn’t have a Dana 41 like the early 1949 CJ3a’s did and 11″ brakes, it’s a nice Jeep at a decent price.
I once bought a CJ3A with a 289 in it. The builder (a monkey I think) shortened the throwout bearing arm, due to the loss of leverage it required two men and a boy to depress the clutch pedal. The brake pedal hit the bell housing before locking up the brakes. It was converted to Saginaw steering. That was a good move but the steering shaft had to be dropped to change the oil filter. Nice rig after fixing some issues.
