UPDATE: It turns out the ferry takes 16 hours to reach Newfoundland from Nova Scotia, so they traveled over night on the ferry.
On Wednesday the group had a short drive from Linwood to Sydney, Nova Scotia, where they caught a ferry to Newfoundland. The ferry ride is around 16 hours (or so I was told), so they don’t arrive until Thursday morning.
The Newfoundland 2019 (or Rust) crew enjoyed a nice group breakfast to start their morning yesterday. That’s a pretty nice view!
After breakfast, the crew hit the road. At some point, Joe Bee’s alternator protested it’s working conditions and decided to strike, causing Joe’s battery to falter. Joe countered by borrowing a battery from Cowboy and Donna’s trailer. Then, they hunted down a new alternator.
The view below is not an uncommon site on our trips. He’s usually arm’s deep helping fix his own or someone else’s jeep.
Once Joe’s 3B was running correctly, and for reasons totally unknown to me, Jim and Kevin took the lead in Jim’s CJ-2A. It’s also not clear who was navigating, Jim or Kevin, and no doubt each will be pointing the finger at the other until the end of their days, but somehow those two (lets call one Lewis and the other Clark) led the crew on an unplanned detour into a remote, perhaps rarely explored area (by tourists anyway) of Nova Scotia. Below is the evidence:
As you can see, it wasn’t the best place for campers, but the jeeps made it through just fine.
Despite, the tour, the Newfoundland-bound crew eventually made it to the ferry dock in anticipation of a six-hour ferry ride to the ultimate destination: Newfoundland.
As they waited in line, they were met by folks who’d been following their adventures. One of those folks, Charles Casey, took this cool photo of the future passengers waiting to pay:
Here’s a closer-up look after they paid:
Besides Charles, Al Mclain also dropped by to meeting the crazy Americans. This photo of Al on the left includes Cowboy in the middle and Joe on the right.
I didn’t catch the name of this visitor on the left below, but Scott’s in the foreground and Kevin is in the back on the right.
This is ferry they’ll be taking.
Here are some additional photos from the ferry line:
Eventually, despite any 2017 warnings from the Yukon that *should* have arrived, those crazy Canadian ferry operators allowed the Newfoundland crew board.
Up top, Cowboy is enjoying the view:
Here’s look at the bunks offered as part of the ferry trip:
At this point, this is all the information I have, other than a rumor that Jim got lost on the ferry. At the point where all hope of finding Jim seemed futile, the Newfoundland 2019 crew issued a senior alert, then “baited” him with food. In no time at all, Jim re-appeared, like a moth to a flame. Thankfully (for me), Jim’s a good sport.
They ended up spending the night on the ferry.
On Thursday evening they plan to be in St. John’s for the day. Then, they’ll return to their campground at nearby PIppy Park.
