this would be a good project for someone. i think the price is a little high. maybe 2 grand. depends how she looks underneath. body looks good.

Do those data plates suggest this was a military or government purchased CJ-3B?
Joe: Must have sold. It does seem this was a gov jeep of some kind.
It does seem mil/gov from pics to the untrained eye, however I doubt very much it is. My theory is owner or previous owner wanted glove box (note pic) so they moved & cut factory dash plates to left dash and added another (newer rivets/screws). Now let’s go to the zoom/close-up of gov data plate & rivets. Not mil/gov unless someone can produce other clues. Colors in the layers would suggest mil/gov. This has been the case on some jeeps.

It’s a mystery! One layered paint color is light green like Forest Service. Early Forest Service paint was dark green with large FS decals. This dark green paint color went through early to mid 60’s. This is a 53 jeep but could have been acquired by FS and painted light green any time. New owner show us your true colors and gov data plate.

Yes, I bought this yesterday. Has a horrible knock on the top end of motor. I will share the findings later when it gets home. The owner did state it was a military vehicle assembled from a crate. His dad sold these and he remembers aprox. 30 in crates as a kid. Does need a small portion of hat channel on both sides, under floors. Sheet metal is real good for a New England vehicle though.
I think the only reason it would be in a crate is if it is a MD JAUN JEEP. I usually don’t take to some passed on stories. But I do like historical jeeps. I’m still going with unproven theory of possible government Jeep but not at all Military. Would have to prove Military with facts, documentation, clues. It’s a no for me on Crate and Military! But I like the Jeep! (Wow, “Military assembled out of a crate”. It gets entertaining on here)
Mark: Congrats on the purchase. I hope the engine knock doesn’t mean a complete rebuild is necessary.
Mike: Given it’s Willys-Overland related, I think the crated jeep story is possible. We do know that some jeeps were crated for export (https://cj3b.info/Factory/FactoryExport.html). Suppose that guys father managed to get ahold of some surplus military 3Bs that were supposed to be exported, but the contract was cancelled/stopped? Maybe Derek Redmond has some insights on this.
