UPDATE: Thanks to Tremaine for supplying better pics of the CJ-2 grille guards seen in a couple of these photos.
Original Post March 4, 2019: These photos were published in the July 22, 1945, issue of the Sunday Star Gravure Section of the newspaper. I don’t think I’ve seen a photo of the jeep pulling the trailer from the driver’s side.
Odd looking half cab in last pic.
Early Worman ?
Cool photos.
A couple of those look like CJ-2’s (NO “A”) or “Agri-Jeeps”. Note the “X-42(?)” on the front bumper on the one pulling the trailer. The half-cab photo might be a real early version also as it still has the military-style grill.
“Pre-production Civilian Jeeps” by Fred Caldwell. Great book on this exact topic. CJ-1, Cj-2 and Agri-Jeeps.
Dave & Bill … yes, that’s the half cab made by Worman for Willys Overland. It was the first known one available.
Makes me want to run out and buy a jeep. What is on the grille in the 1st and 4th photos?
Tom, I believe it’s a grille protector. I’ve never seen them on anything but the experimental jeeps Willys was testing during the war.
Makes sense. Looks like it would shield the headlights too.
Whoa. Great pics.
If you look at the month of March in our 2019 Holy Toledo! calendar, we have a picture of Tremaine Cooper’s CJ2-06 that has one of these grill guards. I believe it was the only one to survive.
Bill
Thanks for the reminder Bill, as Tremaine sent me some pics of his grill guards and I hadn’t yet posted them yet. Now the post is updated with them.
