“original drive train except for rear end (highway gears)”

So what happens if/when 4WD is engaged.
If the original front end does not have(highway gears) and the rear end has (highway gears).

Is this going to spell REAL trouble and when 4WD is engaged the original front end will be turning at a different rate than the rear end (highway gears).

I like this truck, interesting it has a 4 cylinder Pinto type 2300 Ford Engine. Wonder about power, the gas millage may be pretty good compared to a V8.

    James,

    Agreed. That’s a detail I didn’t notice when I posted this ad.

I guess I’d make sure to bring a broom and bucket to pick up the parts that break when put into 4wd.

I made inquiry into this pickup. From the response back it’s not really a 4WD in it’s current state.

Below is the response I got back inquiring about “original drive train except for rear end (highway gears)” So what happens if/when 4WD is engaged?

I put manual lock and hubs on the front axles so the front spindles only “free wheel”. The original gears in front and rear were 5.38 which only allowed the truck to run about 45 mph. I installed a Ford rear end the same width as the Willy’s rear end with 4.10 gears. This allows the truck to run highway speeds. No one makes gears for the front to fit this truck other than the original. With the free wheeling hubs – if you put the truck in 4WD – nothing will happen as long as the front hubs are not manually locked in. PTO and low range in the transfer case can still be used.

Bob posted “anywhere that says this truck is 4w”
Yes on craigslist, on the right says & indxed with drive: 4wd.

So is there any truth to what he is saying “No one makes gears for the front to fit this truck other than the original. With the free wheeling hubs”?

I’m sure I’ve seen these original free wheeling hubs on Willys Pickups that were capable of highway speeds. But I’ve only been watching & trying to research these for one to buy for about eight months, I’d like to know your guys take on this.

Would an entire new/donor front differential with 4.10 gears would need to be installed in the front end to make it 4wd again? No way of getting 4.10 gears for the inside of the original front differential?
