THURSDAY UPDATE II: Wednesday night we stayed at the Maryhill State Park, which is nestled next to the Columbia River. Unfortunately, it’s also next to a train track; and, across the river from a second train track and I-84; and at the bottom of a long hill down which semi-trucks travel using their air brakes all night. For a pretty spot kind of in the middle of nowhere it was noisy, way too noisy!!
So, we are heading to another campground, this one a primitive place in the middle of Oregon. There are no train tracks, no nearby highways, no power, and no cell service ….
WEDNESDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Good news. We have connectivity at our campground. We’ll be camping for a few days.
Now for a funny story.
We stopped to fill the motorhome with gas this afternoon. Next to the gas station was a McDonalds, so Ann walked over in her baggy camping clothes to get a little food. As she walked away she laughed and shouted, “I bet these clothes make me look homeless!”
Her knee has been bothering her, so she slowly walked there, just adding to her “look”. On her return trip, she exited McDonalds, again slowly, then paused to let a vehicle leave the drive-thru. At that point, a woman driving slowly past Ann rolled down her window and attempted to give Ann a dollar bill, thinking Ann was homeless. Ann was befuddled. She looked at the woman and shook her head and said, “no thanks.” Puzzled, the woman shrugged, rolled up her window, and drove on….
I think my next book should be titled, Yikes! I Married a Homeless Woman!
Have a blast!
Must be warmer than here. No way I’m camping in 0 to 20 above weather. But I would go ice fishing.
It’s a brisk 41 degrees …. brrrr! … good news is that I have connectivity.
Maybe the money was for Ann but to get help to you…
No amount of “raggedy” would cause someone to hand you money where I live during hunting season. Some turkey and deer hunters I know won’t bathe for a week and wear unwashed clothes that they keep outdoors in order to not give the prey their scent.
Pascal – I like that. She gave Ann the money to give to Dave for help.
You gots some nice people living out west. Here on the east coast you need a dog and a sign to get any street money.
I USED TO LIVE IN BREMERTON , WASH — 1955 ?? — IT REALLY SUKKED — BARE TREES , GRAY SKIES — that was a good song …
You aren’t a train person? Tammy and I really like that park despite the trains. Oh … and the “no Jeeps on the trail” signs are gone from the park.
I hope you don’t mean the McDs in Madras cuz I was in that town today checking on some Jeeps and would be really mad that we missed. (well… not really mad…).
Let me share my story with you….. My son just got a new retainer for his teeth and he went into McD’s to get something to eat along with his friends. He put his retainer on his tray and one of his friends (his sister was also there that’s why I heard about this) took the tray and dumped it into the trash. As soon as he realized what had happen he jumped up and ran to the trash can and started to paw through it to find his retainer (worth several hundred dollars) and this lady came by and seen him pawing through the trash and offered to buy him something to eat. Needless to say he was embarrassed and that is why his sister had to tell mom and dad about it. We still laugh about it to this very day.
LOL Dave and Willard! And I totally agree with Vernon on Bremerton and the song. Having said that I loved the Port Orchard country where I lived for a year, 2012 – 13. Very much like the weather here in NE Bama in the lower Appalachians. However Dave, did you see the video around the same time frame you were camping at Maryhill of the large boat plowing over a smaller fishing boat on the Columbia? The lady and gentlemen had to jump overboard just before becoming fish food! Now that had to be a cold experience. The Skipper of the large boat said he couldn’t see where he was going because he was sitting down!!!! For crying out loud!!!
Barry: I hadn’t heard that story!
Vernon: Still gray in Bremerton. I live in the east side, where the weather is much dryer and usually more extreme (hotter in summer, colder in winter).
Willard: That’s a funny story!
We enjoyed last night’s camping so much, that we’ll be camping again tonight. Next updates Sunday.
Blaine: The MdDs was in Pasco. We stopped for gas so she ran inside.
We drove down 97 on Thursday, then camped at Cottonwood Canyon State Park. We had the whole park to ourselves. What a beautiful, creative park. I’ll report on it late. We are going to stay another night.
