There are a few jeeps in this, but I thought it was the photo in its entirely that was interesting.

Oh My Gosh! That may be my Battalion, MCB 22 (now NMCB 22) during WW2 they were deployed to Sitka and Attu around that time. I will have to go and check the cruise book online.
Fantastic. I always love it when these forgotten pics hit home with someone!
Our grandpa was deployed to Attu during WWII. His group was supposedly en-route to Africa when the Army re-routed them. He had stories about trying to their unit trying to cope with the tundra, the weather, the remoteness, etc. He has some stories about their action there – especially the last charge of the Japanese – although I didn’t hear them until a few years before he passed. When we were kids, we just knew that grandpa didn’t like to be cold.
And just to give a sense of scale, Attu and Anchorage are ~1,500 miles apart.
Thanks for posting this.
First of all I’m finally back online. My hand held computer/phone was literally destroyed the first of the week. First, on of our big Red Angus heifers stepped on the thing but the Gorilla Glass and frame did just fine even though it took a couple minutes to get her to move off it. Came out with just a barely visible 1″ crack on the upper right corner. Then it turned off real cold for a few days. I had it in our very toasty home, wife gets real cold even in Summer, and it was 19° out with the wind lowering it to around 14°. So I asked my wife if she could go in a get it for me so she did while I was out just to the front unloading feed and was resting. As she stood there talking to me bout something near 5 minutes o guess the phone cooled off rapidly and she made a turn to me and her hand with the phone in it struck her right leg. Oh no! I just watched it flipping and spinning out of control rising about 15′ in the air and when it landed on our front deck it came down on the weakened corner. I’ve never seen so many pieces of a cell phone in my days. When I picked what was left of it all I could make out was a little Android lying on its back with plus symbols for eyes and stars frozen in a circle of the opened belly door. Humpty didn’t make it. It was 4&1/2 years aged anyways. But I got a new one now and happy to be back on here.
I can feel for these tough warriors and what they went thru on those islands. I spent a three month TDY there in the dead of winter. My God it was cold and I can’t remember how few days the wind and blowing snow was below 40mph. I just remember the ropes to hold on to get between buildings all the while walking at least a 40° angle both forward and aft. I can tell you on night I set a filth of Jack Daniels out for an hour and it froze. Holy cow! My fellow comrades in arms back in South Georgia found it hard to believe until a video was put out by the AFN. I’ve got the chills just thinking about it. Poor guys, they didn’t have the accommodations we enjoyed.
I’m glad I posted the pic … Everyone’s got some great stories to share!
Barry … and I thought I was rough on my phones! 🙂
