Gary shared this interesting post about early car racing in Woodstock, New York. Some of these custom race cars were equipped with pre-war Willys engines. So, while not much of a “jeep” story, there is a tenuous link to this interesting bit of regional history.
Dave,
Very interesting find. My original 1953 CJ3B shares space in my shed with a post-war Solar Aircraft chassis dirt track midget race car. Still have some pre-war midget parts on the shelves. Over the last 35 yrs., I have bought and sold over a dozen pre-war and post-war rail frame and tube frame midget “projects”. Many of the pre-war cars were put together with whatever was available…Willys…Elto 4cyl outboards….even 4cyl. tractor engines. All were out-classed by the 1937-1940 Ford small flathead V8-60 engines which had lots of aftermarket speed equipment available. Several of the vintage books on my shelves show pictures of the pre-war cars that are in this link.
After the war, midget racing exploded with lots of GI’s coming home wanting excitement and entertainment……and lots of them had experience with engines, metal working and aluminum craftsmanship. The Ford small V8’s flourished until the purpose built Offenhauser 4 cyls. came along in 1950’s. As a side note, lots of old photos show Jeeps being very a very popular push start vehicle for the race cars which did not have batteries or starters in order to save weight.
Keep up the great work in 2017
Allan
