Mitch Needs Another Perkins Engine

If you’ve been following Mitch Carter on Facebook, you know he’s been doing some great jeeping in his stock diesel-powered CJ-6 (Moab & Black Bear Pass among other places) … at least until he ran into an engine problem.

Now he’s hoping to find a second perkins 4.192 diesel engine. He thinks massey ferguson tractors, forklifts, generators, etc. Even a 4.203 indirect injected one would get him by until i can rebuild the original engine. If you have one, email me at d@ewillys.com or comment below and I’ll get you in touch with him.

I’ve known Mitch since he was a young kid. He does a lot for the PNW jeeping community and is always willing to lend others a hand.

About his engine problem he wrote, “I got crossed up on a rock on the alpine loop, and the fan bit the radiator. We patched it as good as we could which got us off the trail and over one pass to silverton. And this is where i made the mistake of leaving the cap off the radiator so it wouldn’t build pressure…. the gauge only read 200* but it was fooled by hot air and not water. The engine was much hotter and I fear it’s toast. Very little compression, hard to start but will still turn over and run badly while making equally bad noises.”

I don’t know if this will help. I have a ’81 VW rabbit with a four cylinder diesel. I still drive my rabbit but didn’t know if you could use a VW diesel engine as a replacement for the Perkins engine. Just a thought.

I have a Perkins 4-192 I purchased from Kaiser Jeep in Toledo Ohio in 1969-70.
    I replaced my Hurricane 4 in my 1967 CJ-5 with a Perkins 4-192 I purchased in 1969-70. It is a great engine.
It was mothballed in 1976 and I am now resurrecting it.
I would like to get a copy of a Jeep owners manual for a CJ-5 or other Jeep with the Perkins 4-192.
When I bought the engine from Kaiser I received both the Perkins manual and the Jeep parts manual for the Perkins.
I have 2 issues; 1- I need to locate a starter (Lucas M-45G-26178A) and 2- what is the oil capacity (I do not have the factory dipstick).
    Thanks

    Eric

You can check on tractor discussion forum also to get more info about this engine since it was used in the Massey Ferguson MK 65. (Series 100 model 165)

If you still have the Jeep manual parts for the perkins engine, i would like to get a pdf copy of it. Or I can buy yours.

You can check on this website for parts: http://www.agriline.co.za/tractorparts/165/index.php

Actually, look like it was more popular in european country then in US.

I will make a pdf of the “Parts Peculiar to the Perkins Diesel ‘Jeep’ Models CJ-5 and CJ-6” , Issued September 1964, Kaiser Jeep Corporation, Toledo 1, Ohio, next week.

How will I get a copy to you?

The oil quantity in various Perkins 4-192 varies with application. I never had an owners manual as the engine was one of the last 2 that Kaiser had in 1969/70. With the engine I got the green Perkins manual and the pink manual mentioned in the first line.

I knew how much oil to add by the factory dipstick. The dipstick and my knowledge of any oil quantity have been lost over the last 40 years (ugh!).

So any info on the actual quantity to put in at the time of an oil change will be of great help in building a new dipstick.

A kind gentleman answered my request to interchange the “Lucas M-45G-26178A” starter number given in the parts book. The Lucas number was very old and he researched Jeep blogs to come up with a number that corresponds in todays number systems. His starter is listed at http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/1107512_3019.htm. Any comments on this starter would be appreciated, I have not purchased one yet.

I liked the 4-192 so much that in the mid 1970’s I purchased a Perkins 6 cyl and put it in my 1968 Ford truck. The truck is long gone, But I still have that engine also.

I have the book “Parts Peculiar to the Perkins Diesel Jeep Models CJ-5 and CJ-6” converted into .pdf at about 16.6 MB.

How do I submit it thru Dropbox?

Hello I’m looking for a starter for the same engine. I found a place in Michigan called quickstart. They have some parts. However, I sent the guy my starter housing and he kept it? So do you know of anywhere to find a starter? Since Randy kept it I now need a new starter and the number is

    Lucus

This is the first starter I bought for the perkins A4-192 diesel. However it was the wrong one and now I’m stuck with it. This is the place with the bad customer service but he does have stuff.

I purchased a starter for my 4-192 from here last week, it arrived in 4 days:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/290941689041?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

    E bay seller is: urqualitysolutions
He researched the various Jeep/ Perkins blogs and came up with this unit. The price was $99 with shipping included. 10 tooth, 12 volt, 2.8 KW CW rotation.

It bolts up, turns the engine over and looks as if it will work. I will not be ready to start the engine until after the 25 of September.

    Best of luck,
    Eric

I just got my 65 cj 5 with the 4 192 , love the thing. after lots of work the thing is running good, but of course th coolant pump brgs gave out, when i removed the pump als found the impeller was cracked I have both the parts manual and the eng manual i found on line but i am having a tough time finding anyone in canada why can find the pump, Any ideas

  12. Eric Fuller

The 4-192 was a popular engine, if you have a Massey Ferguson dealer near by check on the model MK 65. (Series 100 model 165).

Can you post the links for the parts and engine manuals please, I am contacting Perkins in the UK for info.

A question on the injector pump run/ stop lever on the engine side of the pump.
    Is run forward or rearward?

    Thanks
    Eric

Mike- Contact Olav at Sheffield Tractor. He can likely source a water pump rebuild kit for you. sheftrac@gmail.com . I’ve used them for various parts for mine and have had really good luck and service from them.

On another note- Thanks to Dave and Brandon through E-willys I was able to source an IDI 4.203 as a replacement engine for mine.

  15. Mitch

And Eric- Please go sign up on earlycj5.com. I’ve posted my build thread over there and there are a couple more diesel CJ’s on the site. We can potentially help better from there. And there is a tracking thread over there too since not much is known on production of them. Any questions you have we can probably figure out by looking at the various examples available.
