This August 5th, 1963, article from the St. Petersburg Times describes how Dunedin, Florida, resident Steve Fowler drove from Florida to Los Angeles, north to Idaho, then cross the northern part of the US, before heading back to Florida. The article claims he drove about 10,000 miles. His most worrisome event was a close call at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. He was camping near it when a large bear chased him away from his jeep. Sounds like quite an adventure!

I wander if they had the restrictions on camping equipment (hard sided campers only) areas in Yellowstone park back then?

I doubt it. The way the guy in the article describes camping near Old Faithful, it sounds like he wasn’t camping in a camp site. Currently, there is no area for camping near Old Faithful (https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/maps.htm).

In fact, there are still many places you can still tent in Yellowstone. The only campground that doesn’t allow tents (according the NPS site) is Fishing Bridge RV Park.

Wow, I just noticed the title of that post. What was I thinking? Fixed now.
