“Up for your consideration is my 1952 Willys M38A-1, the military jeep that inspired the civilian CJ5. I purchased this jeep in the high desert in Southern California in 2011 and had it shipped to NJ when I moved to the east coast in 2013. Aside from the military I am the third owner since the jeep sold at government auction in 1971.
The original drivetrain is still 100% operational. Engine and transmission were rebuilt in 1956 while in the service in Japan, drivetrain still has military rebuild tags with information.
Completely road legal, has working headlights, high beams, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, side marker lights for visibility, license plate light. Also has a waterproof cigarette lighter so you can charge your phone or power whatever.
Has been converted to 12 volt for ease of maintenance, rewired with fusebox inside glovebox, running a lightweight Toyota Land Cruiser starter with less than 500 miles since install (still have original starter), has been upgraded to alternator versus original generator. Upgraded to Warn locking hubs up front to save front end from wear when not in 4×4.
Upgraded to Saginaw steering box relocated to improve steering geometry and tighten steering.
Upgraded to passenger side two-hole steering knuckle to further tighten steering and convert to 1 piece tie rod
Installed steering stabilizer this winter to even further improve steering – has very tight responsive steering, tracks nice and straight!
Upgraded to electronic wipers, drivers side motor replaced this past winter, passenger side taken apart and re-lubed.

The jeep is a driver- never had QQ tags or collector car insurance. It’s my second car so not a commuter, but it certainly could be. Will cruise at 70 mph if you need it to. I typically stick to 60 as it’s geared low so you can climb walls in it. 🙂
This Willys turns heads everywhere! It’s impossible to be productive in it, as you’ll always find yourself engrossed in a conversation with fellow jeepers, veterans reminiscing, and curious onlookers. Sporting a well faded military olive drab that is on the browner side, it is very clean on the original steel tub. It’s sitting on 31s at the moment, but I have new military tires and wheels ready to install if you like the original look. Take a look at photos so you can see how it looks with both sets of included wheels and tires. Looks like it just got pulled out of the war, in the best way possible! You cannot duplicate the wear of decades in the California sun! No military markings, so you don’t look like you are parading it about! It’s meant to be driven, not pampered!
Tons of photos available, please email me for more and with any questions.
This is obviously my baby and whomever gets it will have one badass machine! Everyone will ask you where you found such a clean amazing little warrior! Have receipts for all work mentioned above.
The only issue is the Ramsey winch needs new solenoids, and emergency brake needs new brake lining (included). Won’t you keep him chooglin’? Asking $7500 or best offer. Clean NJ title in my name.
Will consider trades for something equally badass and cash on top if necessary. Interested in old school VWs, Volvo wagons, Mercedes Benz wagons and diesels, 50s American sedans, Datsuns, and anything pre 1980! “
