UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3499.

(04/20/2015) Has an L-head in it.

“Up for sale is my military style 1960 Willys Jeep. Seems to have the older and more reliable motor in it (older than 1960). Is this the Willys Go Devil engine? Can someone help me identify correctly? I took it down the road but would suggest towing it home to check out systems. I have many photos and can take more if you need. This is a black plate car and is currently registered. No back registration to have to pay(a definite plus). Text if you have questions. Won’t be around long. Comes with some parts and FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, in good condition(matches other one)plus spare tire. Front passenger tire has slow leak and might need to be remounted. I would like to keep the roll bar, so if you want the roll bar, it is sold separately. “l

This looks promising especially the rust free location. That oil filter would normally be found on an M38 wouldn’t it?

  2. Dan

Yes. That is a Cuno filter and was used in some but not all of the M38 Jeeps. I am not aware of them being used on any other vehicles although nothing is surprising when your dealing with anything old. For those who don’t know how they work, when you change the oil, instead of changing a filter cartridge you open a drain plug on the bottom to drain the housing and you turn the lever around several times to remove the sludge. You then reinstall the plug and your done. If this is a M38 motor the serial number should start with “MC”

Dan and Peter, I think you guys are on the right track. Nothing under the hood is correct. The owner is asking for help identifying the motor and seems honest on everything else. The rest of the jeep looks pretty good and he says you get some more parts. It’s missing quite a bit, but if he has a box or two, you’re in business… that’s cool about that type of oil filter, too.

I think I have seen them for sale at DeBella’s and surplus city jeep parts. They’re around. A lot of people didn’t like them so the replaced them with the Fram cartridge filters. I have one that I use and I think it works fine. Saves a lot of money on cartridges. I hate to admit my abdication but I’ve been working with M38s and CJs for over 30 years. Yep. I’m a jeep-a-holic. I have it bad. Doctor says there’s no cure. I’m doomed.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Peter DeBella had them. I’ve visited his warehouses. He’s got a wide range of unique and rare items.

Thanks Dan & Dave I’ll check that out. I would guess Peter DeBella would be a good place to start.
