UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.
This is a little confusing. Seller calls this a CJ-6A engine, but the tag reads CJ-3A. It’s a flathead, so the CJ-6A designation seems incorrect.
“For sale is a 1963 Hesse Hornet compressor made by the Hesse Carriage Co. It was designed to sit in the back of a pick-up or on it’s own small trailer. This particular Hesse uses a rare Jeep Kaiser 4cyl CJ-6A engine. It pumps air by having two of the 4 cylinders blocked off to compress while the other two function normally. The engine itself looks good and runs great. It may need a small tune-up from storage but nothing major. It does not come with a battery or gas tank. I tested it by rigging up a temporary tank.
The tag that isn’t legible in the photos reads –
” HSB Natl. BD. & Mer,
73669 ASME 1963
Wessels
Detroit Mich
W.P. 160 PSI
Temp 650F HD. ELL”
Unit can be viewed or inspected anytime.
ENGINE IS VERY HEAVY! WILL BE LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY. WE HAVE A FORKLIFT ON SITE SO LOADING HERE WONT BE A PROBLEM. “
Looks like he got the cj6a idea from the model # on the tag. Your right, Dave, that’s a flahead. I think it might be a just a funny coincidence. On a side note, I had a friend try making a compressor out of a vw engine. It actually worked pretty well but the air coming out was hot enough to melt plastic fittings! Maybe water cooled would be a little better, still it would be 200 degrees or so…
A guy had one of those at the reunion last year and was running it. Cool little piece of equipment.
I believe he just missread the number, it’s looks more like a 3 than a 6.
I have the manual for the Hessey hornet also a head gasket , it takes a special headgasket , they will keep up to a 3/4″ air wrench and maybe a 1″
“
Rex,
Would you have a scanned copy of the hessey manual available?
I have info on the 4 cyl jeep if interested
Hi Richard,
I’m interested. Feel free to email me at d@ewillys.com.
Thanks,
– Dave
I don’t have a scanned copy of the Hesse Hornet manual just the orignal manual and new head gasket and Willy’s industrial engine manual
If you are interested in the manuals you can email me at rex002@centurytel.net ,
Richard, what info do you have?
I have access to one, any buyers out there?
I have a Hesse Hornet compressor, is there a market or demand? Hate to just scrap.
Henry,
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen much demand for them.
