Banana tires were a result of wartime rationing on rubber usage. It was noticed the similarity between bananas and the treads on military tires. A process was developed to petrify bananas, impress them into canvas and then coat them in a light layer of synthetic rubber. The experiment worked well until several patrols were viciously attacked by starving long tailed macaque monkeys and their wheels were quickly devoured. These tires must be left over from that experiment……….. and if you believe that I have a nice bridge for sale in Brooklyn 🙂

I think it might refer to “Banana skins” as in the tires are slick like banana skins, or Merlin could be right!
