I found a 1961 article in the Chicago Tribune announcing the Willys Convertible Jeep. In actuality, it’s an announcement of the Tuxedo Park series of CJ-5. Interesting that it was positioned as a convertible.

Ok, So here is my area of expertise, old enough to remember when “convertible top” on a Jeep was something new. Prior to the now familiar fold back (convertible) top, the only way to remove a fabric soft was to Peel it off the frame, time consuming. With the new convertible top, it was easy to let the top down.
My dad had a 1950 Cj3a in 1962 he had wanted one but was told by the salesman at Mide Motors that they didn’t make them for a CJ3A. I still remember the sales man’s name; Peter Lintas (Fat Pete as we called him.
That makes more sense. Thanks for the info 🙂
Mike’s info is correct. The Tux “convertible” top stayed on the frame and folded back. Some had a tonneau cover to clean it up a bit when it was folded. You can tell the convertible bows easily, they are the ones that hang out of the bak of the tub when they are folded…. I think about 5-6″. The top is secured to the center bow with a vinyl loop, you can actually remove it…. but you have to pull the bows.

Thanks Bill for verifying my info, it’s good to know that my trivial little known Willys Jeep facts are of some value to EWillys readers.
Mike- I have a few of these top frames, but it took me a while to figure it all out. I found an original 18k mile 1966 CJ-5A Tux that still had the red top and correct frame attached to it…. this is what finally made me figure out why the CJ-5/Tuxedo Park brochures showed 2 different soft top configurations. The “convertible” top is odd, but I guess it’s cool on a Tux

BILL, WOW, that is rare and unique, to find a CJ5A (2 wheel drive Tux) With a RED TOP. In my lifetime, I have seen only one of those RED TOPS. Many years ago, 1960’s, a local trucking CO. had a CJ5 TUX with a Powder BLUE TOP, again the only one I have ever seen that color. It’s great to exchange facts & little known information, Thanks. And that’s to Dave & EWillys for providing us with the format to do this.
Mike- its’ a 4wd Tux.. 18k miles and sat in a garage for the last 15-20 years. White, red seats, red top, everything is there… except the hubcaps. It took new springs and a complete brake job to make it go after its hibernation, and a new thermostat. Runs and drives great now… kind of scary going 70mph on 1966 tires though!

Bill, I think the gimmick used in that time period was to feature a different color combo for each new model year. White with red upholstery was the featured color for 1966. I remember the local Jeep dealer had one of these sitting on his lot for some time and I dragged my dad to “LOOK and Ogle” it. A local auto body shop bought it and added pin stripping. This one had a V/6. Is yours 4cyl or V/6? I presently own a 1966 CJ5 with a V/6, though not a TUX.
