(05/30/2014) Most of the pics are small, but the pic below indicates this was a pretty nice build.

My wagon is a Maverick with white, orange and black paint job. Originally the wagon was available with just the four cylinder engine from the Jeep. Later on a six was added as an option. The six had about 70 HP so the wagon was no barn burner. Now enter my particular wagon. This wagon is far removed from the original.

To begin with the original engine is long gone. The front of the frame and suspension was cut off and replaced with a Fat Man Mustang II style replacement. This provides coil springs, and rack and pinion steering. It also means disk brakes and 15 inch America Racing wheels. The new engine is a 350 cubic engine Chevy small block with a 400 crank. This combination is commonly referred to as a 383 stroker engine. It has a throttle body fuel injection system, headers and small mufflers exiting in front of the rear wheels. This combination is typically good for over 300 HP. The rear end is a Curry/Ford 9 inch modified to hot rod standards by Curry. The rear is also equipped with disk brakes. I believe the rear ratio is 4.09:1. When I bought the wagon it had a Turbo 350 three speed automatic which I replaced with a R200 built by Art Carr, a pretty famous hot rod transmission builder. The R200 is a four speed unit with an overdrive fourth gear. This brings the engine speed down to about 2800 at 60 on the freeway.

Other features include a Vantage AC/Heater. The AC is inop although the compressor is still installed. The wagon also has an Ididit polished Tilt steering column and grant wheel. The shifter is Lokar as is the emergency brake mechanism. I replaced the original speedometer with an Auto Meter electric unit that is calibrated to the drive train.

I bought an electric wiper motor kit and replaced the old vacuum motor.
For the most part the body is solid. There is some rust in the lower door panels so I bought replacement lower panels but have not installed them. The wood door and side panels on the inside have been replaced and were recently refinished. The front seats are from a Ford Ranger pickup. The rear seats are original. The battery is located in a battery box in the rear compartment.
I have a notebook full of receipts for modifications and repairs made over the years, starting in 1993. These total something over $50,000.

This wagon has a lot of good bones but needs cosmetic work to bring it up to snuff. A really nice pick up recently brought over $100k at auction. These wagons are the quintessential forerunners of all SUV’s. They were before anyone knew there was such a thing. The performance level of this hot rod wagon is awesome. It looks good, goes like hell and is still practical and functional. It has a custom trailer hitch and I have an eight foot utility trailer I throw into the deal. That has all the makings of a good investment and a lot of fun. I’m still grinning about blowing the doors off a modern day Jeep Cherokee.”

This has been the week of Maverick, and if it’s your THING, this probably does the trick. Myself, I’m still droolin’ about that Florida one earlier this week.

Sounds like to me the seller is practical. It was priced higher, but didn’t sell. So, he’s forced to drop the price.
