1943 GPW **SCAM** :: Was Google Wallet Scam

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB) • TAGS: , , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE V: This scam disappeared from the world, thankfully.

UPDATE IV: After being deleted this is back on eBay again. A bidder decided to bid $50,000. Someone’s playing with the seller.

=====================

UPDATE III: Mike alerted me that some of these pics are now on an ebay auction. Person selling it is listed as brand new profile on Jan 19, 2014. I see no reason to doubt it is still a scam. It has been reported as potentially fraudulent.

================================

UPDATE II: This scam has appeared on Craigslists. Lance forwarded pictures he received from the scammer.  There are 17 total.

UPDATE: John looked into this scam and received the following email. It appears this seller is likely running the Google Wallet Scam (which I’d never heard of).

I am glad that you are interested in my Jeep Willys . It's a Orig Matching #'s Jan 1943 Ford GPW Army Jeep Willys Military .
This jeep was completely taken down, sandblasted, and all of the rust was cut out and replaced with new metal. This jeep has been completely gone threw. The engine, T-84 transmission (gear box), Transfer case, breaks, steering box, Axles, starter, generator, Radiator, Carter WO Carb, voltage regulator, water pump and distributor have ALL been rebuilt by professional shops and receipts can be provided for all parts. The engine has a two year warranty.

The Firestone tires, wiring harness, spare data plates, gas tank, tail lights and horn are all new replacements and are 100% correct. The jeep is still its original 6 volt configuration. The seat covers are new . All of the combat rims are strait originals. The battery is brand new and this jeep starts, drives, shifts and stops with no problems at all .

I legally own a clear title, free of any liens or loans, under my name. Not interested in a trade and my final price is $4,500.

Just want to sell it ASAP, I am using Google Wallet as my ex-wife suggested, she also sold her car, without any headaches!
First of all please let me know where are you located ?

I will also need to know if you require a loan ? Or the funds are available ?

I wonder if that hood number has been registered on the G503. …not that knowing the real owner of the jeep would tell us who/why they are using these pics as part of a scam or “catfish”. Too bad it isn’t real: notice the machine gun mount frame section up against the bushes.

I just flagged it as “spam”on craigslist. I don’t know if that will get the ad pulled, or if several other readers need to do the same. How many flags does it take to kill an ad?

Thanks Jay. Tonight my search mechanism found at least ten other examples of this post on Craigslists, one as far east as Cape Cod. So, it’s definitely being spread country wide.

How does a scam like this work? Is it phishing for personal information? Or is he trying to get would-be buyers to send money? He clearly doesn’t have this jeep to show.
On the up side, with eWillys readers on the lookout and flagging these ads, that should shut this scam down … or at least slow it down.

These type of jeep scams don’t last too long, as we (collectively) get them shut down quickly.

In one case last year, a seller was attempting to get money wired to them in a hurry. They claimed to be in the military and had to act quickly on the sale. Outside of that, I don’t know of another way this scam works. Maybe someone else does?

I inquired about this. This is his e-mail back.

I like the overemphasized (redundant) “legally own a clear title free of any liens or loans, under my name.” This would be one of the signs that it’s a scam.

Over the past weekend I also saw this ad in the Wyoming craigslist and forwarded it to my brother who lives there. He also got the same reply from the scammer. My brother then let me know that he smelled a rat. Then I started doing my own snooping and found this from Australia – http://canberra.chaosads-australia.com/item/54281/
and this from a motorcycle forum, (you have to scroll down,)

    – all from the same parasitic scumbag

The funny thing is a couple of the guys in the dorm at college used to fill out those free magazine subscription cards for the same guy, Brian Farmer! (And occasionally his brother Bruce….they’d send a few issues of each magazine until no payment showed up. Must be a universal scammer name..)

    Keep flagging the ads, guys.

I know i would never buy a jeep without seeing and driving it first. i always pay cash and receive the title in person. if it looks too good to be true and the owner will only ship and transact money over the internet, automatically i smell a scam. an honest person would never do business that way. be careful people. if the ad has no phone number and the seller won’t email one for communication, its probably a scam. i figure if they wont talk directly on the phone then they dont deserve a sale anyway even if legit.

i found it in roanoke va. should i try and waist his time? just thought id let you guys know since your thread told me it was fake

  12. mmdeilers Post author

Christopher, feel free to email the seller. Maybe the story has changed. Then make sure to click the ‘scam’ link as well.

    Thanks,

  15. Lance

My dad recently got this same message is there anyplace that we can upload images to regarding this fraud? What I would like to do is upload all 20 images that he received so if someone does an image search for them they will come across this post as fraud. If you use a browser like firefox and go to images.google.com and drag the picture into it you will get like images on the web which can help you determine fraud as in this jeep that was just listed in Sioux City, IA

    Lance,

You can email them to me (d@ewillys.com) and I’ll add them and any additional information you send to the post.

There are numerous typos/poor word choice in the ad that jump out as a scam. Thanks to all who flagged!

Just goes to show you what a lousy place eBay has become to buy and sell stuff. Most of eBays telephone support staff does not even have a good command of the English language.
