UPDATE: Glenn mentioned a photo, along with this Al-Toy post from 2012. So, I’ve added Glenn’s comment and the photo to which he refers.

Glenn wrote, “All the Overland Heavy Hitters are here. Cast Iron Charlie Sorensen, came to Willys to escape Henry’s Henchmen, Ward Canaday, last of the old bankrupt Depression crew. I don’t remember Mr. Paris, but Colin and I shared Mr. Bell in the photo of the Al-Toy above.”

I’ve seen this photo, but not the included caption.

“This is an original press photo. GH BellPhoto measures 10.25 x 8inches. Photo is dated 09-27-1945.”

Very interesting photo. Notice the color of the head light rings. They are black instead of body color. Perhaps #26 in the Chrysler Museum is correct after all.

  2. matt

the rings aren’t on there….look closely and you can see the retention ring and screws holding the bucket to the grill…….if someone buys this, please psot it up somewhere so we all can share it

Yes the rings were body color until #38687 – this one pictured is odd – Shame they didn’t use color photos, you can’t tell if that is black or the wheel contrast color. My ’46 (by SN) #38865 is chrome.

I think Matt is correct, it looks like rings are missing. The PR guys must have been in a hurry for the pic. Maybe Willy’s execs couldn’t make up there minds on color and were holding up the production line. Is the photo date(7/24/45) close to the records for 1st production of vehicles.

Yes, I bid on it, and if I get it I will scan it for those interested.

FYI, the last picture I bought from this same archive was actually in very poor condition but it didn’t show on the scan.

    I liked the patina though…

Great Photo, I don’t think I’ve seen before. All the Overland Heavy Hitters are here. Cast Iron Charlie Sorensen, came to Willys to escape Henry’s Henchmen, Ward Canaday, last of the old bankrupt Depression crew. I don’t remember Mr. Paris, but Colin and I shared Mr. Bell right here on eWillys in another fantastic photo. I can’t get the link to work, but look up Christmas Al-Toy Jeep to see a B/W radio promo pix from 1945. Maybe Dave can link it up.

thanks keith..I debated bidding on it just to scan it in and post it up on the 2a page or here…I hate people selling press released pics…
