UPDATE: Was on eBay. **SOLD**
This looks very restorable.
“This M5 generator was built for the US Army in World War II, by the Hobart manufacturing Company. It is built on intergrated steel skids. The generator has a four cylinder ZXB Hercules engine. From online research, this engine was sometimes used in the Willys Overland Jeep. The output of the generator set can be field set for either single or three phase operation. The output is rated at three kilowatts. This unit has sat for many years, but I believe can be rebuilt to operate correctly, and could be used as a functioning display. Just to make clear, the unit does not run at this time. This unit is rare today, and from research, provided electrical power for the BOFERS anti-aircraft gun setups in WWII. I have found similar generators for you to look at on you tube, but I have not been able to download a link due to ebay rules. Type in M5 generator on the you tube search bar.”
Hurc engines were used in tractors, but I never heard of one in a jeep, even prototype jeeps. But Willys industrial engines L134 (same as jeep with slight difference in compression) were used in Hobart and other military generator sets.
I was confused about this seller’s comment. That’s why I included this post.
I happen to own an M5 that my dad restored. It is a tiny hercules, and those engines were never used in Willys products. He is likely thinking of Continental and the 226 CI Lhead.
It is 110 volt three phase for signal corps radios. so it is 3kw, but in my case is 3 1k circuits.
It’s in Lowville NY. Wanna buy it? I have the original manual. It has a fresh NOS fuel tank
I’m looking for one of these Hobarts with the Hercules motor. Any for sale out there? Prices?
Parke, I’ll keep an eye out for them. I’m sure they are out there somewhere.

I have one for sale here in Seattle Washington. How much were you looking to pay mine is painted red and has been restored. It also has had three 110v receptacles added. I haven’t put fuel in it or tried to start it because I’m not exactly sure it takes a 12v or 6v battery. I came with a old movie theater I am restoring and was used for a back up for the ventilation system that used three phase motors.
I have one for sale
