Jim posted some pictures to Flickr of this weekend’s Fall 2012 Midwest Willys Reunion.  He got a few goods ones of his cool school bus (see the last pic).  Thanks Jim.

In this first pic I loved the phone number on the side of the wagon.  I bet that’s a 1963 wagon, too.  If only phone numbers were so simple today.

Wow, Hand lettering, a lost art. The lettering on this wagon is so cool; even the colors of the lettering capture a a time and era of great anticipation and excitement for me when I was a child. I still do hand lettering on my Willys Jeeps. When I bought my 62 wagon, it had some spray painted over lettering on the doors. Once I rubbed off the spray paint and was able to expose the lettering, I realized this was a wagon I remembered from my youth when it was new. Over the years, we both held up pretty good.

That hand lettering on that wagon is only a couple of years old. Looks real nice though. The guy inheritted the wagon and had that lettering added after he got it. He drove it to both reunions this year and he lives in Minnesota! A feat in itself!!!

That’s my brother, Don’s, ’63 Wagon. He’s owned it since he was about 14 when he got it from our neighbor, who was also named Don – so the lettering is a nod to the original owner and to my brother. My brother had a friend do the lettering awhile back so it would look old. I’ve written a few stories about Don and his Willys, like when I tried to drive it off ramps and put it in forward instead of reverse (whoops). If I have time I can post a link to that story. I have it somewhere on my computer…

    HI Myrna,

Thanks for the addition information about your brother’s wagon. I know I’d enjoy reading the stories and I think others would also. Please feel free to add a link to your stories here in the comments section or just email it to me at d@ewilys.com and I’ll make sure to post the link for readers.

    Thanks,

    – Dave
