Frank found himself a rare M-38CDN and offered to share some photos.
He writes, “Just wanted to let you know that after looking for one of these since 1979/80, I finally aquired an m-38. a candian one at that! I’m quite excited about that, because only 2135 were ever built between feb and nov ’52. I found it on kijiji.ca in Fort st. john,BC. that’s 700km (460 mi.) from my place in Edmonton. I Drove out with my trailer to look at it fully prepared to return empty if the jeep was a rust bucket. It would have been a 1000 mi trip for nothing. Needless to say, it was not a wasted trip. I’s nearly all there, but the data plates and gauges got sand blasted by a previous owner; not the guy i bought it from. It’s 24 volt still and has almost all the stuff needed for fording. I’m sending a few shots of the trip and the jeep at home. I’ll keep you up to date on the resto. I’m looking to make it as stock as possible but also use it as a driver.”
It”s a shame about the data plates & gauges, but this still looks great! In general, are there many jeeps in western Canada??
i like the trailer shot. looks like that trailer was almost made to hold that jeep. maybe could
be a little loner with locking tail gate.
there’s a fellow here in edmonton that’s done a few of these and he’s got gauges etc. another guy in ontario is shipping me a full set of data plates and other assorted lodds and ends. the one thing i’m missing is the d.o.d. i know it’s 9- – 52 just not sure of the exact day. there’s a few jeeps kicking around but it took me 30 years to find this one! as for the trailer…. i had to cut the front of the box and fold it down to get the jeep on. i’ve fabricated a fold down gate on the front and back to make the trailer a flat deck with sides, 5200 lb axle will take the weight
Frank, your “new” M-38 looks mighty fine. I hope you have lots of fun wrenching and driving.
i’m hoping so! when i’m done i told the previous owner i’d drive up to fort st. john to show him. maybe i’ll just keep heading north on the alaska hiway and pop in.
Sounds good but you might want to wait until next summer, we have fresh snow on the mountains and the leaves are falling from the trees. Winter’s coming fast but all that means is… it’s Willys time!
Frank, great find, keep us posted with your progress
