Saturday Night Update

• CATEGORIES: Books, News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

So, I go away for one night (hanging out in Yakima)…. though a fun night …  and the search site (jaxed)  that I have used faithfully for 4 years to find old willys & jeeps for sale across the US receives a cease and desist letter from Craigslist lawyers.  I have seen that happen to other sites, but somehow jaxed could always get around it, until now.

While I can still search through a mashed up collection of individual craigslist sites through SearchTempest, searching nation-wide will be more difficult (or at least time consuming using SearchTempest).  So, I will spend a day or two trying to figure out another method.  One way or another I will have updates Sunday night.

In the meantime, I finished draft 3 of my book, which involves jeeps and more.  The reviews I have received are extremely positive, so I hope to complete one more draft and then have it ready sometime in September for ebooks (real books will take longer, but I hope will come at some point too).  Here’s a draft of the book cover:

I am an absolutely unbiased reader, no prejudices, and with no other reason to say anything but the truth….I loved the book. Hugs, mom

A loving Mom, Hugs and Jeeps… what more does a person need? Thanks Dave for all the work you do for our (the readers) benefit.

If I can only bookmark one site on my browser, eWillys would be it. Thank you, Dave! Have you tried DailyLister?

there is also crazedlist.org. but i hope craigslist doesnt start going after these other sites. they only bring more traffic to craigslist and help their customers sell stuff. i too, need my ewillys fix.

    Dave-

I know your Mom is totally unbiased (and she liked my 48 Jeepster) but to have a Mom on your side unconditionally is great. I really miss my Mom and Dad..but I want to thank you for all your hard work for us Jeep fans and I hope you can find a solution to the problem that lawyers stuck their nose into. William Shakespeare was right about lawyers. They seem to cause more problems than they solve.

I just don’t get why craigslist does not like the national search thing. If a guy in Podunk, Iowa has some jeep parts to sell, and not one in Podunk is looking for those parts, but some guy in New Mexico is, then what’s the problem. I loved Jaxed, what a great tool.

I’ll have you know it’s Podunk Falls, Ia.
It’s not the end of the World but you can see it from there… 😉

It seems I have found a search tool that meets my (our) needs … Craiggers.com. Craiggers returns national results with pictures. http://craiggers.com ….

Just FYI, here are a few aggregators that have been blocked:

Crazedlist: This was the very first craigslist aggregator that I used. Craigslist blocked it a couple times, which is why the operator suggested users use Firefox to overcome craigslist blocking of them.

Craiglook: I used this occasionally before it was blocked http://blog.claz.org/2010/10/18/craiglook-shut-down-by-craigslist/

Claz: No longer supports craigslist searching either.

    Crgslst: blocked in 2008.

    Listpic: blocked in 2007 http://consumerist.com/2007/06/craigslist-blocks-listpic-tool-for-viewing-craiglist-pictures.html

Yahoo Pipes: blocked in 2009 despite an attempt to work with Craigslist. http://techcrunch.com/2009/12/01/craigslist-yahoo-pipes-flippity/

Some people cite Craigslist as being ‘free’. However, just for some interesting numbers, Craigslist is estimated to have had revenue of around $122M in 2010 (http://www.quora.com/What-is-Craigslists-revenue)(not everything is free on craigslist) and has around 50 employees . So, they have plenty of money to pay attorneys to chase sites they want to shut down; however, they rarely seem to go after sites, so it might be fair to say they aren’t too heavy handed with the Cease & Desist orders (again, jaxed had been around for at least 4 years).

As far as I can tell, the bandwidth use by some national craigslist-mash sites is the principle reason for the cease and desist letters. A secondary reason seems to be that the Craigslist folks (perhaps Craig himself) would like to keep craigslist locally focused. Here is a quote from Craig in 2005, “We block usually because someone hits our servers really hard; and also, we’ve had overwhelming feedback to emphasize the local nature of our site.”
