It was easier access back then. That connection from the now “private island” to the newer and higher “flyover style bridge” is a challenging steep climb, or drop, that the low gearing of a Willys would be good for. Once at the top, tittering on the edge of the ramp ‘before accessing into 65MPH (plus) traffic’ on the bridge, it can be scary, especially with a manual shift vehicle, as you do not want to ‘stall it’ and coast back down… backwards, or get run over by fast traffic approaching… Some call it progress???
